General

Taking along modern electronic equipment on an overland trip through Africa may at first seem a little bit strange, after all many countries in Africa have little if any modern technology. But GPS, cameras, laptop and mobile or satellite phones can make a difference and help you get the most from your safari. However remember that dust, heat, humidity, and water can all cause there fair share of problems. Make sure you have somewhere dry, dust proof, out of direct sunlight and well padded in which to keep your cameras and laptop computers. Downloading digital pictures onto your laptop will be necessary on a long trip but consider transferring your images onto CDs or DVD discs, which can be stored out of harms way. GPS systems are generally mounted on the dashboard and are usually made to withstand the rigors of an overland trip.

GPS Systems

Probably the most obvious piece of electronic equipment taken on safari these days. But of course you need to be able to use them and understand them. Many of the latest models have the ability to have waypoints, routes and tracks downloaded or uploaded from a computer and can use digital maps. Remember that paper maps can be inaccurate, particularly those covering Africa; in north and central Africa even the famed Michelin maps can be up to 40kms out.

Fortunately most GPSs have digital electronic maps of most areas of the world. Computer based systems using the latest software can now offer high detail maps of even the remotest areas. GPS will allow the user to locate their position on both digital and paper maps, follow routes and navigate to difficult to find points. Check out www.garmin.com they have an excellent website which includes a downloadable manual - GPS for beginners - an ideal starting point for anyone new to GPS.

Laptop Computers

More and more overlanders are setting up websites, it is a great way for friends and family to be a part of the safari. Internet cafés can be found in an ever increasing number of African countries, allowing travellers to update web pages and digital photos. Laptops are also good for:

  • Backing up digital photos onto CDs or DVD discs

  • Loading digital music onto an MP3 player

  • Viewing photos taken on a digital cameras

  • Using PC based GPS packages

  • Viewing movies taken on a handy cams or camcorders.

  • Used in conjunction with a portable printer they are a great way of copying stored documents etc in out of the way places.

Obviously security is an issue with expensive electronic equipment like laptops, if possible keep them locked in a secure case or box which is ideally permanently fitted into your vehicle.

Digital Cameras

Almost everyone has a digital camera these days. They are ideal for the traveller, especially the latest models with interchangeable lenses. The ability to take lots of pictures pick out the ones you want and discard those that you don't without having to have the film processed and the pictures printed is great. Although the SLR digital cameras with interchangeable lenses are the best, its worth considering taking a second, smaller digital camera. A small pocket sized model is ideal for that great instant shot, easy to carry and quick and easy to use.
